Advices for tooth whitening

Achieving the perfect smile is easier than you may think. Nowadays, bleaching is the most popular dental treatment. When done with sufficient circumspection, it is without risks, fast and affordable.  It is possible to do at our clinic or at home, but it is important to emphasise that the dental status exam and choosing the right methods and tools is of great importance to a teeth-whitening therapy without complaints. The thoughtful choosing of the right concentration degree of agents, the initial and final impact time with regard to the teeth-colour will minimalise the sensitivity the patient experiences during the treatment, and helps attain the desired whiteness. Please ask your dentist for advice so that we can find the appropriate treatment for you.

With dental balancing many discolorations can be eliminated, lightened. During a consultation you can speak to your doctor about these discolorations and decide about the obtainable changes. After the therapy the teeth darken a little which will be compensated by pre-decided over-whitening. In 10-14 days the shade can be considered final. During and 2-3 weeks after the treatment strongly colouring foods and drinks (coffee, red wine, red pepper, forest fruit) are to be avoided. For protection, use special toothpaste (GC MI Paste+). It is also the right time for the planned aesthetic interventions (fillings, shells, crowns). This sequenced process ensures the desired results, minimalise the sensitivity during and after treatment and the aesthetic restorations will harmonise with the new colour.

Before more expensive treatments, it is always worth a try to eliminate discolourings.

The process

What is the most effective dental bleaching method and what is the process?

We can distinguish between two basic types, the first of which lightens the shade of the teeth compared to the original, while the second lightens the teeth back to the original colour. The so-called whitening toothpastes for example more or less eliminate the tooth accretions, but do not change the original colour.

What causes discolourations? Outer and inner effects may darken the teeth with time. Outer effects are the regular consumption of dark foods and drinks (e.g. red wine, coffee, smoking) and the everyday effects in general. The discolorations caused by inner effects appear because of injuries, ageing, medicines like tetracycline, or excessive fluoride intake in childhood. Teeth colour can be different depending on the congenital colour, thickness and transparency of the teeth. Using the methods of dental bleaching both the outer and the inner accretions can be eliminated.

Clinical tooth-whitening

The fastest method of tooth-whitening is using peroxide gel of high concentration degree at our clinic. We start with depuration of teeth, protection of gum, and then we apply the agent. To speed up the process, we may use a special illuminator lamp. The treatment takes 20-40 minutes, in the course of which the teeth undergo remarkable changes. However, this is the method which may cause the most intense side-effects, starting from gum injuries to the prolonged sensitivity of teeth. We do not recommend this treatment for sensitive teeth. Because its aggressiveness, we never use it at our clinic, not even when the teeth are not especially sensitive.

Tooth-whitening at home

Home tooth-whitening is less drastic and also cheaper, but its results are similarly remarkable. After thorough clinical oral examination, we give you a uniquely made tooth-whitening splint. We also give you an agent of much lower concentration (for protection, it contains calcium-fluoride complex) which you insert into the splint before sleep. Although the process is slower than in case of clinical dental bleaching, this is why the treatment is gentle, has less side-effects and discomforts. In case of any discomforts, the patient- after a consultation with the dentist- may suspend the treatment for a day occasionally, and may continue the treatment after the sensitivity disappeared. The results expected from clinical dental bleaching are always attainable with this method.

To complete the list, we have to mention the tooth-whitening sets available in shops. They are not personalised for the needs of the patients, so their effectiveness is highly questionable.

Is dental bleaching always effective?

Tooth-whitening treatments only have an effect on the surface of the original teeth; it does not change the colour of the dental pieces. Ask our colleagues for help.

Advices for tooth whitening

In order to be satisfied with the outcome of the dental blanching, and to minimalise the occurring nuisances, it is advisable to follow some rules. By this home blanching the patient can control the process, together with the supervision and instructions of the doctor.

The process takes 2-3 weeks to complete. During the whole time and a few weeks after, food and drinks with much colouring are to be avoided. These are e.g. coffee, tea, red wine, coke, and foods containing lots of red pepper. Of course, smoking belongs here as well. During the blanching the enamel slightly changes its structure. These pigments discolour the enamel ruining the aesthetic result.

It is important to notice that a temporal sensitivity of various degrees develops in almost all cases. This is where the home blanching has the biggest advantage: the patient can intervene. If the teeth of the patient are sensitive, it is possible to stop the process for a day or two. When the minerals build back from the saliva, tooth mousse etc, the blanching can be continued.

Temporal sensitivity can be reduced by using toothpaste that reduces sensitivity, (labelled sensitive) and try to avoid extreme stimuli (very hot, cold, sweet etc.)

Of course, in our dental office we provide even more detailed instructions to everybody amd answer every question when you receive the whitening agent.

We wish you a successful blanching without complaints.
